There are still a few regions in the south part of Italy that are relatively untapped, one of these is Calabria located at thesouthern tip of Italy, “the toe” , it is a region rich in history, natural beauty, cultural treasures, and still a little rough on the edges. We recommend you fly to Reggio Calabria (REG) if you want to explore most of the region and cross over into Sicily. You can also fly into Lamezia Terme Airport (SUF) if you want to explore the central part and cross over into Puglia and Matera, all from Rome FCO. You will love the food, the wine and the beaches.

Must have rent a car to get around independently

If you choose to explore Sicily from here, you can take the ferry from Reggio Calabria into Messina.

We suggest you spend two weeks exploring Southern Italy, ideally between May and end of September, avoiding July and August because these are the two busiest months of the year.
